Hi,
I wanted to add text to a formula which is --
="no of distributors billed in April are"&COUNTIFS('DIST-det-kolkata'!G2:G123,"SOUTH",'DIST-det-kolkata'!H2:H123,"Active")
but the above is not working.

Looks like it works to me. I'd put a space after 'April are' so it becomes 'April are 20' rather than 'April are20'.
And you just need to wrap text and expand the cell height, or shrink text size to fit.
Unless of course I'm just missing what you mean by "not working"....
