    Excel selection of a cell

    Hello

I am having trouble selecting a single cell on a worksheet. When I click in a cell, excel selects more than one cell at a time. Sometimes it will select three or more cells below the selection in addition to the cell I require (screen capture attached). In this image, I selected 4.728 and excel selected the two cells below. If I hold down the left-click I am able to scroll back to select the cell but it is very awkward. It does not matter how careful I am with the selection.

Is there a setting to prevent this happening. In AutoCAD, it is possible to reduce the size of the selection-cursor but I am unable to locate the adjustment. I have increased the size of the cells to 200% and the problem still occurs. The problem is intermittent but when it starts, it stays. Logging off and on again seems to solve the problem for a limited time.

    Regards

Try pressing F8. Could be you've got extended selection switched on.

Alternatively, you may have pressed the Scroll key. That can be a pain.

Thanks for the hint F8. Something new to remember. I have had this problem for a year now, ever since I bought a 64-bit computer. If the problem was not sporadic, I would blame me but it seems to be a glitch.

Did the F8 fix it this time?

F8 did not work and I was working in page view but I think the problem occurs in all views. I will check next time the problem occurs.

And nothing to do with Scrolling? It would be interesting, but possibly tedious, to track which applications are being used and when the fault appears. Do you use any "unusual" applications?

pretty much every report of this I've seen has been using page layout view and switching to normal view seems to clear it. I've also seen reports that changing the zoom level slider may help.

Re: Excel selection of a cell

I rarely use Page View other than to adjust page breaks. I don't tend to do any data entry or build any formulae in that mode. So, can't really comment.

The picture in the first post doesn't really tell me anything other than there are three cells selected.

If, for example, cell H16 was selected and I pressed F8 (extend selection) selecting any other cell would, as the name implies, extend the selection to include a rectangle bounded by the original cell and the newly selected cell. The only way to get back to a single cell selection is to select the original cell.

    I've tried Googling this: http://bit.ly/LMU4mZ

The posts seem to go back to 2008/2009 and they all have the same theme: click one cell, get several selected. In the threads I have looked at, the description is the same as yours, there are no solutions, just several workarounds including F8, Page Layout View, exiting Excel and so on. Other suggestions relate to the zoom level.

Other than this, I'm out of ideas.

    Regards, TMS

Thanks for that link. I am not alone. I wonder if it is machine or operating system specific?

    Dear all

Thank you for all the advice. When the problem occurs, which it will, I will try all the above and report back.

    Regards
