    excel sharing/links

We have two large files (500+mg and 800+mg) that are linked to pull information between each other. These files are also shared with multiple users accessing them at the same time. Each individual user may have both of these files open at the same time. The problems we are having with saving errors, resource errors, blinking screens and other misc errors are compounded when all users are trying to access information at once.

Are we using Excel beyond the intended functionality or have we set up files incorrectly?
