    Stuck! Please help with formula

    Hi guys!

I'm taking a beginner Excel Class. I need help!

In my Excel file I have a column full of numbers. At the end of the column, I have a SUM Function so it adds all the numbers together to create a total.
Now my book is asking me to create a 'complex' formula that will show a 30% decrease in the total number of cupcakes.

    I tried:
    =B9-0.3
    =B9/.3
    =B9*.3
    =B9+.3

Btw, B9 is 172 in my excel file in case you want to try it.

but none gave me the answer I'm supposed to get, 120.4. I did some basic algebra on a piece of scratch paper and realized that I have to multiply 172*.7 and I get 120.4 but why?

    Hi,

You need to use this formula... =SUM(B9-(B9*0.3))

    It's basically saying do 172 minus 1/3 of 172....... 172 - (172*0.3)

... just doing B9*0.3 will show only 1/3 of 172, not a dcrease of 1/3

Please edit your thread title to comply with the forum rules.

    Rule #1
Use concise, accurate thread titles. Your post title should describe your problem, not your anticipated solution. Use terms appropriate to a Google search. Poor thread titles, like Please Help, Urgent, Need Help, Formula Problem, Code Problem, and Need Advice will be addressed according to the OP's experience in the forum: If you have less than 10 posts, expect (and respond to) a request to change your thread title. If you have 10 or more posts, expect your post to be locked, so you can start a new thread with an appropriate title.
