Data Validation Help Please

Hello,

I have created a spreadsheet using Data > Data Validation > List > Source. For ease of access, all of the drop down choices are words such as 'apple, orange, mango' but I want to change the values to numbers such as '1, 2, 3' for data analysis. When I edit the cells to change the words to numbers, the values are not updated in any of the drop down choices. How do I get the drop down choices to automatically update with the new number values? I don't have much experience using excel so any help is greatly appreciated.

data validation triggers only when the cell is being edited. The content of the cell does not change when the underlying data validation list source changes.

You could do a find and replace on the sheet.
