    Cell Formatting problem

    I am using Excel Mac v. X.

I want to enter the value "1-14" into a cell. When I do so, it changes to "Jan-14". The program's Help function indicates the following solution:

    - highlight the desired cell
    - Format
    - Cells
    - Number tab
    - General
    - OK

When I do so, entering "1-14" into the cell still produces "Jan-14". I cannot understand why.

In fact, I want all cells in the column to use this scheme of two numbers separated by a dash or hyphen.

I know that this is elementary, but I am a beginner.

Format the selected range as Text instead of General.
