How to do sums of values which correspond to names

    Hello
I have a question about excel which I am not able to solve.

I have two columns: in one there is a number and in the other there is a name.
My goal is doing the sum of the numbers which correspond to the same name.

    For example:
    2 anthony
    3 jack
    4 antony
    1 micheal
    3 jack

    I should have as result

    6 anthony
    6 jack
    1 micheal

Since my work has a huge amount of names I need something which do it automatically. Is it possible?
    I am a n00b with excel.

The best bet would be a Pivot Table: http://video.about.com/spreadsheets/...vot-Tables.htm
Where there is a will there are many ways.

    Sure....

    http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/ex...001034632.aspx

    http://www.techonthenet.com/excel/pivottbls/create.php

    http://www.cpearson.com/excel/pivots.htm

and you can google for "Pivot Table Tutorials"

Basically you go to data|Pivot tables, click Next, select where to put the table, click Next, click Layout and drag the name column to the Row Label area, and the Qty column to the Data area..

thank you so much. Now I have solved a problem but a new one is arrived.
Why in the pivot table is this number 393916263333 converted into 393916E+11? How could I avoid this conversion?

Using the SUMIF() function you would get the same desired output without making a pivot table.

Re: How to do sums of values which correspond to names

Right click on the Name header in your pivot table (grey cell) and choose Field Settings, then click Advanced then select from Autosort Options and select the Qty field from the "using field" drop down.
