Not sure your description is accurate. A1, B1 and C1 are all in the same row. If you insert a row below A1, cells B1, C1 and D1 are unaffected. A2, B2, C2 and D2 would shift down, though. It might help if you explain what you're trying to do with that index formula, and what result you expect. The best way to do this is upload a sample workbook showing your data layout and the results you would expect (and why).
