Converting graphics in an Excel document to text

I have received an Excel document that uses a red x to indicate a positive response across 10 columns and about 300 rows. So a lot of red X's in those 3,000 cells. Is there a quick way to convert those little icons into some kind of text representation that indicates those positive responses? like the equivalent of a text find and replace, except find image and replace with text?

an Excel document that uses a red x to indicate a positive response

As a guess, I would say they are using Conditional Formatting with Icons.

You can check by selecting one of the cells that contains an X
    then select Conditional Formatting
    then select Manage Rules

Not that I'm aware of, the Icon set is limited a specific set of figures.

You could use Conditional Formatting to change the cell color, or the font color.
