have values in column change color after a certain total is reached

I have a column in which a dollar amount (currency) is entered. That column is totaled at the bottom of the column but I want to have the values entered after reaching a specific total (say $5,000) be red. In other words, one $5000 is reached all other subsequent values entered in the column would be red.

    ex

    $3500
    $4000
    $4500

    $5000
    $5500
    $6000
    etc

    thanks for any help

You will need to use conditional formatting. From the Home tab click conditional formatting. Then select new rule, go from there.

Let me then add that I am a virtual beginner and conditional formatting (other than picking from one of the existing formats) is Greek to me. Let me rephrase what I am trying to do. Maybe if there was a running, hidden subtotal somewhere for that column and when that subtotal reached $5000, then the $5000 and everything after the $5000 in the column would turn red.

i am sure that if you uploaded a sample file with a verisimilitude of your real data / layout, some kind soul would probably setup the conditional formatting formulae for you in a jiffy...

Thanks, icestationzbra. I have attached a sample without the headings. I marked the column in which I am seeking help. Thanks, again.

in order to check the Conditional Formatting formula employed in the region highlighted with red border -: ALT + H + L + R > this should take you to Rules Manager. here you can see the formula. if you select it and click on Edit Rules, you can change the formula or the value that i have used (2001) to a one that suits your purpose.

the Cumulative Sum column is just for depiction, you can get rid of it.

Thanks. I actually figured it out before I checked back here. I did it a much harder and longer way so it really helped to see your version and see how I could have expedited things. Thank you
