    Ranked Choice Voting

I am trying to make excel figure out the results of a 9-person election using Ranked Choice Voting.

Ranked choice voting works where, if there is no majority, the candidate with the lowest number of votes is eliminated. Then, on ballots where the first choice was for the eliminated candidate, the second choices are counted. This continues until someone reaches a majority.

If both a ballots first and second choices are eliminated, then the third choice is added in. If all three choices are eliminated, that ballot is "exhausted" and is removed from the equation.

Here is more info on how it works:http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j...9mm_papvVrE0mQ

Right now, I have it so that it can count first place and second-place votes. However, I can't get it to accurately figure out how to allocate third choicesIRV Test System3.xlsx.

    And ideas?

    A few comments:

    1) If the ballot is "Exhausted", does it count for the total cast?

    2) Where in your worksheet is the "majority" condition (i mean the % that achieves majority). is it 50%?

    3) If 2 candidates get the same amount of votes and it is the minumum, do both get eliminated in the same round?

    4) I see this could have as much as n-1 round, with n being the amount of candidates... and you say you want a 9-person election but your ws has from a to z...: Do you want your ws to be able to handle any number of candidates or just a fixed amount?

Sory but before getting to play around I wanna get rid of these doubts!

    Ok. I assumed:

    1) No

    2) I already saw that it is >50% (not >=)

    3) I didn't take this into account... it just eliminates 1 (I think it's incorrect, but it was easier to do for a first approach)

    4) You must add columns / rows and copy formulas to include more candidates, round or ballots as needed.

I also tampered with your data to make a case easy to verify if it works properly (I think it does...) Take a look and if you don't get how it works 100% then tell me and I'll exaplain (but now I have to go make myself some nice dinner )

NOTE: You must check in OPTIONS > FORMULA > ALLOW ITERATIONS, otherwise it won't work...

    See the workbook at https://app.box.com/s/kjgl1r92kko85ze3c5cy595fzj9y04jh

The macros are only used to generate random input.

    Re: Ranked Choice Voting

I am hoping to run a rcv election for up to nine candidates, and I need the top three vote-getters with a 50+1 threshold, is there a way for me to use this as a template for that, or do I need to make an entirely new sheet?

Essential is there a way I can use this template to actually calculate a vote, or is the rng too ingrained within the template?
