Linking spreadsheets - Range names

I'm new to creating formulas that I can use to link to other spreadsheets. I have created a range name for a cell in my first sheet but when I copy/paste the formula into another sheet (same document) it gives me an error message of "Data on the clipboard is not the same size or shape as the selected area, Do you want to paste anyway?", but if I select yes, I get, "Cannot change part of a merged cell". Do both the original and the new cell have to be the same size?
Is there a different way to create or input the formula?

Hi KatieL,

To answer your query, in your case.. YES.
The target (the area on which you are pasting) has some merged cells where as the data you copied do not have any merged cells OR the position of the merged cells on both (the area from where you are copying and the area on which you are pasting) are not same...

Apart from this, as a best practice... always paste the data by selecting the top left cell ONLY of the area on which you are pasting... e.g., you have copied a1:b6 and you want to paste it on d1:e6.. then select d1 and paste.. thanks
