    Folder saving options

I am looking to make a folder containing say 20 files unsavable as it stands. By this I mean I have a folder that contains 20 excel templates, each one of these templates may need to opened up and information added by my shopfloor staff, this information then needs to be saved in another folder that is speacially for that customer.

The problem I can see ahead is they could quite easily save the template file in the template sheets folder, so can i stop this from happening via a command because even if I tell them not to do it you can be sure someone will.

If you open a template file and then go to save it you will see you are then working with an xls file so wouldn't overwrite it unless you really tried hard.

Ah if only it were so simple, my staff (high volume manufacturing = not the brightest of people) will not neccessarily see it as a template, the option to just press the "save" icon is too easy.

That still won't overwrite the template file. Clicking the save button after a template file has been open just displays the Save As box and prompts you to save the file as a normal excel document.

Try it with one of the templates you have saved on your pc.

    Re: Folder saving options

I think I may be on cross purposes here, the folder contains 20 seperate excel files that I have created they are not specifically template files unless I can save them as a template file thus your above comment would then make sense.

I may be about to learn something new again!

    Re: Folder saving options

Yes, to save them as templates, just do a "Save As" and change the "Save Type as" box to Excel Template or Excel Macro Enabled Template. Then delete (or move from that folder) your original file leaving just the template.

Another option would be to set a password on the file to "read only"
Again, on the "Save As" window, near the bottom of the screen will be "tools"> General Options
    Enter a "password to Modify"
They will be able to enter data but when they go to save it, it will require they save it under a new name.
    Hope that helps.
