Hi
Why, just don't use this in B1?
=IF(C1<>"","John","")

Thanks for your answer fortis:
but initially I want a default value or label in cell b1 that will change to "John" if I enter an input in c1.
You cannot have a formula in one cell that puts a value in another cell. Please explain better and don't use vague language like "... a default value ..."
