Sum with two conditions

Hi,

I have some of data contained in cells A4:C13.
First column A4:A13 has dates. Please note these can repeat themselves eg. A1 = 01/02/2012 and also A2 = 01/02/2012.
Second column B4:B13 I have fruit name eg. apples, cherries and pears.
Third column C4:C13 I have numbers

I would like to do a SUM of pears for a specific date say 03/02/2012.
The formula with SUM would appear in Cell A2.

VLOOKUP does not seem to work as dates are repeated so condition does not work.
Lets' say we have three dates with 03/02/2012 in Cells A8, A9 and A10.
Fruit pears is in Cell B9

What formula should I write in A2 so I have number of pears in Cell C9?

in Excel 2007 0r later:

=SUMIFS($C$4:$C$13,$A$4:$A$13,X1,$B$4:$B$13,Y1)

or
in any version:

=SUMPRODUCT($C$4:$C$13,--($A$4:$A$13=X1),--($B$4:$B$13=Y1))

where X1 holds date of concern and Y1 holds fruit of concern
