I am new to the forum and seeking help with a problem. I have been slugging through two 4" books and all the Internet I can find, and I am at an impasse.

I am trying to streamline the scoring process for a math tournament.

I have a list of student competition scores. Names are in Column A; Grade Level in Column B; and Scores in Column C. From this list I want to choose the top 4 scores and put them in a small separate table. This table will have the same three columns as the main list.

The rules for the Top 4 Scores are as follows:
  • Students can be from any grade level
  • Duplicate scores are okay (just as long they are different students)
  • No more than three Grade 8 students can be included -- This is the problem child (see below).
  • There is no such limit on 6th or 7th Grade students

It is possible that the top 6 or 8 scores are Grade 8 students, but I can only select the top three. The fourth score must be the best of the 6th or 7th grade students. There can also be any number of 6th & 7th graders in the top four -- but never any more than three 8th graders. Anything I have tried seems to trip up if there are not exactly three 8th graders on the list.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Don Simmons
