Simple answer for everyone but me!

    hello.

new to forums, usually try to figure it out myself but i cant seem to get the right formula this time. i have tried Vlookup, Hlookup, Match, Index but nothing works correctly.

    sheet 1
    column a = 1st names
column b = diff letters of the alphabet not in any particular order & can be duplicates
    column c = i want this to be the # of the letter ie: a = 1, b = 2, c = 3 etc... so when i put 'N' in column b25, column c25 shows me 14 or put 'D' in column b9, column c9 shows me 4

    so on sheet 2 i made a table & i called it 'abc123table'
    column a: row 1 = a, row 2 = 1
    column b: row 1 = b, row 2 = 2
    column c: row 1 = c, row 2 = 3
    all the way to column z: row 1 = z, row 2 = 26

any help would be appreciated. thanks in advance.

    Just use a function

    =CODE(B25)-64

    CODE produces the ASCII code
    ASCII A is 65
    ASCII Z is 90
so just subtract 64 from the ASCII code to produce the result
    no tables required

Ensure you describe your problem clearly, I have little time available to solve these problems and do not appreciate numerous changes to them.

Your post does not comply with Rule 1 of our Forum RULES. Your post title should accurately and concisely describe your problem, not your anticipated solution. Use terms appropriate to a Google search. Poor thread titles, like Please Help, Urgent, Need Help, Formula Problem, Code Problem, and Need Advice will be addressed according to the OP's experience in the forum: If you have less than 10 posts, expect (and respond to) a request to change your thread title. If you have 10 or more posts, expect your post to be locked, so you can start a new thread with an appropriate title.
To change a Title on your post, click EDIT then Go Advanced and change your title, if 2 days have passed ask a moderator to do it for you.

PLEASE PM WHEN YOU HAVE DONE THIS AND I WILL DELETE THIS POST
    Hope that helps.
