Excel 2007 : format diplaying instead of sum?

after using excel for 15 years all of a sudden i'm at a loss. during prior years when a cell displayed the formula instead of the sum it was easily fixable, and it RARELY ever happened. now the same thing i have been doing for years to correct it does NOT work, AND it happens all the time! the only difference now is that QuickBooks 2012 has been loaded and there is a tab in Excel for Quickbooks that was NOT there before. Does that have anything to do with the problem? Desperately need to know how to fix!

Is the cell formatted as Text?

i've tried text, general, currency...everything it seems. on this one in particular today i put a space in front of the line i was trying to copy and it worked. BUT it happens all the time and i don't know why. It's doesn't usually happen all the time like it is now. thanks for response btw.

If the cell was formatted as Text, then entering a formula will leave it displayed, not evaluated. You have to change the cell format to any other format, and then edit and re-enter the formula for it to be evaluated. If this is happening for all formulas, press Ctrl+` (note that is the backwards apostrophe usually in the top left corner of the keyboard)
