    Deny access to read-only workbooks

    Hi All,

We have got a problem with users opening spreadsheets on read only and amending them not realising the amendments will will be saved.
Can i stop excel giving people the option to read only and just deny access unless it was free?

    Hopefully a quick one!!

    Thanks everyone.

    Hi,

They may be saved but the original will not be changed.
A read only file is not a protected file, just one which can't be written to.
Only the person who opens the first instance can make changes - and by definition any subsequent openings of instances of the same file are read only and can only be saved with a different name

    Thanks Richard,

I am fine on how a read only works. I understand all of that. What i want is that they can't open a read only. If it is free it opens, if not then is says unable to open, file in use etc etc and they can go no further. Is it possible to do this?

    Hi Emmaly

I'm pretty sure that this is possible, however it would require macros. If the user disabled macros then they would be able to open the workbook anyway. There are ways to limit the impact of this, but doing this would mean that you wouldn't be able to open the workbook without enabling macros.

    Would this be ok?

Re: Deny access to read-only workbooks

    Hi Kyle,

I was worried this might be the answer. To give you a brief idea of the problem, we have an office in Japan who are NOT very computer competent. There are sequential orders numbers in a sheet that they need to select and apply to their orders. So multiple people are going in on read only and therefore picking the same order number and chaos ensues!

If we can't get them to read and understand the statement "This file is locked for editing by 'X', would you like to open as read only" i am worried that the likelihood of them enabling a macro is quite slim. Their english is good, but they seem to just dismiss the message.

I don't know what to do!

Just be aware Emmaly that if the user disables macros then they will be able to open the workbook anyway

Re: Deny access to read-only workbooks

You can set all the worksheets to very hidden and place a password on the VBA code, this would hide all the worksheets if the user opens without macros. You can then adapt the code to unhide all the worksheets

Do i have to input code for this too?
This is the first piece of code i have ever entered. I am going on a course in February
But if you could let me know what i need to enter to make the hidden thing work that would be brilliant.
