Hi sem,
if you open dilipandey's attached workbook and enable editing then click on conditional formatting under home tab then go to manage rules you will see the formula there.

Fornula is already there. Open the conditional formatting window and select / Edit the formatting to view the formulas used. Hope this helps.

Note that the two conditions could be combined with OR:
=OR(TEXT($A2,"DDD") = "Fri",$A2="Friday")
That's just taking Dilipandey's solution and combining the formulae.

Based on your sample just TEXT function will work, like
=TEXT($A2,"dddd")="Friday"
