Help...! Turning two columns of data into a table

    data.xls

Help/advice needed and would be much appreciated...! This seems like it must be simple and will probably be very obvious to someone on here --- I just don't know what function or tool to use.

    See attached spreadsheet.

I'm trying to return a table (shown empty in cols D to G) showing how many times the the three variables in column B (For applicant, For authority, Partially upheld), occur for each organisation listed in column A (Aberdeen City Council, Aberdeenshire Council, etc etc).

I tried to count them manually, then played around with COUNTIF, but I kept ending up with less than the total number listed (1336)....

    Hi,

Please find attached the solved excel file. You can achieve the solution in two ways using countifs or the pivot table feature.

You cannot acheive it through simple countif because it can take only one criteria at a time.

    Chrism,
if you are using OpenOffice as stated, be aware XL solutions might not always apply

Hariharan R - Thanks so much. it would be good if a countif function allowed several criteria, then it would make it easier for novices like me.
    Regards
    Chris
