Create drop down menus linking from other sheets

    Hello.

I am trying to create a diet sheet.

Basically the first sheet will have a list of meals 1-5.
Each meal should have dropdown menu's underneath so I can select foods that I will enter in the second sheet.

When I select the food, I want it to copy the whole row (Food name | calories | protein | carbs | fat ) into the first sheet under the meals.

    How hard is this?

I have no idea where to start, I tried looking at a few tutorials but they were for different things.

Re: Beginner - How to create drop down menu's linking from other sheets? (for diet pl

little confusing.. you have first sheet with list of meals 1-5.
when you select food (not sure from which sheet), you want to copy whole row into the first sheet under the meals but first sheet is already having the list of meals.

I guess you have list of meals in first sheet and when you select any food name from it, you want the whole row to be copied into second sheet.

Let me know if I am correct in my understanding.. Thanks.

    Hi there,

Here is what I just done.

    Sheet2: \1

I created this and selected cells A2>E6 (Everything but the headers).
I then clicked on Forumla/Name Manager/ and named it "Foods"

I then went to sheet1 and created this: \1

I highlighted those cells, and clicked on: Data / Data Validation / Allow: List / Source=Foods

It then says: The list source must be a delimited list, or a reference to a single row or column.

If I highlight only a certain row or column in sheet 2 and create a name, and use it as a source in sheet 2 it will work.
But I want to create dropdown "rows", so when I select a food from the downdown list, it will paste over the whole row (the calorie information, protein, carbs etc.

Why don't you use a drop down list consisting of a group of food created by a "hidden" column in sheet 1, then vlookup based upon that cell

    Hi poundcoin,

I believe the suggestion shared by 00Able will do the task but if you still need validation in Sheet1, the method you are using is not correct.
You need to create names using details in Sheet 2 e.g., for apple -> 123,2,8,7 so if you choose apple in sheet 1, then validations in front of apple should only allow 123,2,8,7.
Now the question arises, do you really want to do this using validation as I believe vlookup or other formula will do the easy trick here. Share your thoughts?

    Thanks for that.

I still have no idea how that works but its what I am trying to do.
