    Database Function - Field problem

So I'm starting database functions and I'm a bit confused.

I have attached a link of the database I'm working with

    http://imageshack.us/f/155/excel2g.png/

My problem is trying to see how many people are from the north region.
So I chose the DCOUNT database function and made the Field
Cell E9. However, I am getting back the number 0 even though
there are clearly 3 entries that meth the North Region criteria.

When I change the criteria so that the only restriction is people
above the age of 1, it gives me back a DCount of 11 - as it should.

Any ideas? I'm assuming the problem is with my field criteria but I'm not sure what

    Moshtarak,

    i can't open your link,

    but just a quick observation.

if you are using the DCOUNT correctly for other calcs,

i have found in the past that when i'm typing out the functions myself rather than using the FUNCTION dialog box, i forgot the Quotation marks when using text

    just a maybe

    regards

In E2 you should enter this

    ="=North"
    Audere est facere

Thank you both for your replies.
I tried "North" and "=North" and neither worked :/

Neither of those is what I suggested

You should type it in exactly as below, i.e.

    ="=North"

If you do that it will display as =North

Please also post the formula you are using......or better post the workbook....or a workbook with an example

Note that DCOUNT won't count "North" entries specifically. DCOUNT will count numbers in the specified field, only in rows which meet the criteria

    Sorry - I meant I tried ="=North"
So DCount is specific for numbers? That would explain it then. Is there any database function that can count the amount of textual entries?
