Conditional Formattin - changing a cell if text appears in a column

    Hi All,

I'm having some trouble and I would appreciate your help. I have a blank column, G2-G30, and I want the format of cell I1 to change whenever text of any kind is put into any of the cells of G2-G30.

I have a conditional formatting rule of
    =G2:G30<>""
set up for cell I1, but it only works if I put data in cell G2, and no other cells in the G2:G30 range.

I'm sure there must be a quick fix for this but I can't work it out. Any help appreciated.
