Editing data in a cell

Hi,

I have a VLOOKUP that is pulling data into a cell eg 123456.mgmt.GSDC but only want to display the up until the first full stop in the cell eg 123456

How can I edit the data to represent this? If it can be achieved when originally populated from the VLOOKUP this would also be better but I'm not holding out for it!

To do it in a single cell, find the "." in the VLOOKUP answer using FIND to give an answer n, and take the left-hand n-1 characters using LEFT, e.g.
