Formulae between spreadsheets not working correctly

Hi

I'm pulling in data from three separate (private) spreadsheets into one consolidated (public) spreadsheet, using SUMIF.

However the formulae do not work in the public file, unless the three private files are open.

The three private xls files cannot be made public so how can I ensure the formulae work even when the private files are closed?

As well as the SUMIF formulae, there is also a simple ' = ' (equals) linking a cell in one private file to a cell in the public file.

I'm using 2007. I'm hoping it's a simple settings solution.

it's to do with the workbooks being closed, not the private or public issue. Use sumproduct instead which still works on closed workbooks
