Hi,
In an effort to manage the finances concerning our son, my ex girlfriend and I turned to excel *cue soft music, lol*.
I created a spreadsheet (see attached) to manage the two type of situations for both parties: a split expense, and a loan to the other party. I also added a worksheet for my monthly payment to her ($200), and a summary sheet.
The reason I created this was because more often than not at the beginning of a given month I don't owe $200 but less because over the previous month I have given my ex extra money (etc) and so the primary goal of this sheet is to keep track of the expenses and show both parties who owes what each month.
Since my expertise was limited, after creating the worksheets and formatting them properly I asked a friend to help me code them so that they all funneled properly into the summary sheet and outputted the value per month that was owed as of the 1st. All is working except for the column "Jay's Monthly To Pay". It displays negative numbers, and also it seems to me that when an expense is incurred in a particular month it doesn't seem to affect the amount to be paid next month (which it should) but rather the amount to be paid in the month in which the payment occurred (which doesn't work). for example:
- If I spend $50 as a split expense on May 23, it will affect to 'to be paid' for May, not for June. This doesn't work because the payment for May was made May 1st.
I would ideally like the "to be paid" to not go below 0, but to carry forward after hitting 0. for example:
- (assuming the books were balanced): If on May 2nd I lend my ex $500, I would want the "Jay's To be Paid" column on the summary sheet to show: June: $0, July: $0, August: $100
Thanks for the help. I would ask my friend but he's exceptionally busy, and my ex is basically saying that she doesn't understand how the sheet works (and I don't blame her). Feel free to change how things are coded if you have a better way - currently you have to manually enter the date AND month in 2 separate columns, and I'm not sure why so if just entering the date is possible that would be amazing.
Sincerely,
Jay
