I'm considering converting the text to numbers by way of
(IFERROR((CODE(MID(A2,1,1))&CODE(MID(A2,2,1))&IFERROR(CODE(MID(A2,3,1)),0))*1,""))

In which case I can use the formula in my first post that works for numbers.

Please let me know if you have a better approach that doesn't involve converting the text to numbers.
