Index Match formula

I am having trouble with the proper format for my database search in excel. Shoud be pretty simple so I have not included a sample spreadsheet. I have a workbook of historical stock data with dates in column A, symbols listed across the first row with the pricing data below each symbol. I just want to first search the symbol across the top row, then locate the date in column A, and then find the proper price in the referenced symbol column.

I've been using the index, match combo to search a single list of dates and prices. Any ideas? Using excel 2008.
