Excel 2007 : Calculating diference between two times

I am trying to calculate the difference between two times and get a number as the answer.
Example: Start time 9:00am Finish time 3:30pm total time 6.5
I have been able to get the answer as 6:30 reading as a time, but I need to somehow get the minutes to devide by 60 to get the number that I require for another worksheet.
Any Ideas?

You need to multiply by 24 to get hours as a decimal e.g. with start time in A2 and end time in B2

=(B2-A2)*24

format result cell as a number

hi this did not work for as i was getting negative decimals. my question is similar as im trying to calculate the difference between 2 times with the required answer in minutes. eg the time difference in minutes for start time 23:56 ; off time 01:10
please help
