Sorting data based on drop down lists.

Is it possible to have a drop down list on Sheet 1 which will filter data on Sheet 2 then display the filtered data in a different drop down list on Sheet 1?

Sheet 2 contains 398 column's and 15 Rows made up of University Course Data (eg; Course Name, Level, Course Code etc). The reason for this is Sheet 1 is to work as a User Interface and will display information on the course selected. There are two drop down lists on Sheet 1. The first drop down list which has the following listed (Undergrad, Postgrad,PHD,Honours) is to be the list that will filter the data on sheet 2.

If Undergrad is selected the second drop down list on Sheet 1 will only display the filtered list from Sheet 2 which will be all the Undergrad courses only. This will reduce the courses displayed in the Course Name drop down list.

    Hi timheffo

    Welcome to the forum

You would do best to post a sample workbook showing your Sheet Layout and perhaps Before and After examples.

It should clearly illustrate your problem and not contain any sensitive data.

    Cheers

To attach a file to your post, you need to be using the main 'New Post' or 'New Thread' page and not 'Quick Reply'. To use the main 'New Post' page, click the 'Post Reply' button in the relevant thread.

On this page, below the message box, you will find a button labelled 'Manage Attachments'. Clicking this button will open a new window for uploading attachments. To upload a file from your computer, click the 'Browse' button and locate the file. To upload a file from another URL, enter the full URL for the file in the second box on this page. Once you have completed one of the boxes, click 'Upload'.

Re: Sorting data based on drop down lists.

    Cheers Marcol,

Well I have attached the file. In the file I have 3 sheets GUI, Lists and Data List.

'GUI' is the user interface which I want to be able to filter data on the 'Data List' sheet using the Select Level drop down list. If Undergraduate is selected then in the Select Course drop down list only undergraduate courses will be listed. Is this possible? Have been playing for a while with this but no luck.

Can it be done by using an Advanced filter?

    Try this workbook.

This has dependant lists, for an explanation see this link.
Contextures - Excel Data Validation - Create Dependent Lists

Also, in the Sheet Module for Sheet "GUI"
Please Login or Register to view this content.

There is much more that can be simplified in your workbook, but try this for starters.

    Hope this helps
