    Complex calculation in Excel 2007

    Hi,
Can anyone please help me with trying to get this equation into Excel (please see attachment). I don’t have a clue how I would input this equation.
(The numbers i.e. “D15” ect refer to my planned cell numbers)

Any assistance would be much appreciated.

    Many thanks

    Re: Help with equation

Have a look at the SQRT() function.

    http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/ex...in=HA010277524
    or
    http://www.excelfunctions.net/Excel-Sqrt-Function.html

and - to get the square of something, use the ^ symbol - eg: =2^2 would give 4

    Re: Help with equation

Thanks, I did have a look at the SQRT() function you mentioned but I am a little lost as I'm no expert. I am particularly confused with the power of 2 part of the equation. Hence I have no idea how I would build the calculation in Excel.

    Thanks for your help though!

As your request sounds like homework I'm not inclined to do it for you.

I'll give you some assistance on the SQRT() and the square aspects of your formula.

    You need (E9-F9)^2 and (G9^2)/2.

Everything you show under the square root symbol needs to be contained within the brackets of the SQRT() function.

No I can assure you its not home work. I'm too old for that. Hence I need help with my maths and Excel.

I think my syntax should be as follows then:-

    D9+SQRT((E9-F9)^2+(G9^2)/2+H9)

The output I get looks about what I would expect. If I'm off the mark with my formula I would appreciate the nod.

    Many thanks for your help.

Steve, that looks correct but you have a extra bracket on the left side. Since you are new at doing things like this if you feel the need you can break it up and start with small pieces. Such as have one cell that calculates (E9-F9)^2 and another cell that calculates (G9)^2. Then when you do the formula you are using cells instead of worrying about doing a long formula inside of one cell until you gain experience.

That should help you break down the process you need to use every time you do something differently.

    There isn't an extra bracket.
You can use the Evaluate Formula tool to step through the formula piece by piece to see how Excel is arriving at the final result.
Or you can highlight individual segments in the formula bar and hit the F9 key to show its result. eg: highlight (E9-F9)^2 and hit F9 to see what that segment equals.
