counting multiple cells with different items

I need to count how many 1st, 2nd,3rd,4th, and 5th responses were received in each area by month.

if anyone knows how to solve this i would be greatful. Thank you

dja823, if we assume the following:

1. solution must be compatible with XL2003 (precludes COUNTIFS)

2. you must show 0 for each point within the results matrix where no combination exists (precludes Pivot)

I would suggest for sake of performance you do the following:

E3:
=B3&"^"&C3&"^"&TEXT(D3,"mmm")
copied down to E37

H4:
=COUNTIF($E$3:$E$37,INDEX($G$3:$G3,MATCH(REPT("Z",255),H$3:H3))&"^"&$G4&"^"&LEFT(H$3,3))
copied to H4:Q8
copy H4:Q8 to remaining Area tables.
