How do quickly count large set of single qualitative data responses.

I'm having a problem quickly sorting, counting and figuring out % of total qualitative responses in excel 2003.

For example I have the following data (small snippet of 1660 responses).

AB
AB
AC
AC
AC
EF
EF
IL
CA

What I need is a count of each individual qualitative data and then a % of the whole. For example how many AB's are there, CA's etc. To individually type of the =countif() using a ** search string would take a few hours. Is there a way to highlight Column A that includes these non numerical values to get a count on column B at the end of each group?

A pivot table would do the trick nicely for you. If you'd like a sample, please post a spreadsheet mockup of your data.

Thank you. I was doing pivot tables but neglected to drag the data into both the row *AND data screen. Dropping it into both worked.
