You might have your Calculations set to Manual....
Go to Formulas tab and in the Calculation section, click Calculation Options and choose Automatic.
Does that fix it?

Funny thing is I had this bright Idea to check if there was an option RE this almost immediately after I posted, and I did find this option and I did exactly what you just suggested.... and it works!
