Excel hangs the instant either Tab-Scroll Button is pressed. It does not matter if there are 30 tabs or the default three (3) tabs...whether the spreadsheets within the workbook are empty (new) or full (contain data). Task Manager reports a "Not Responding" condition, PC works, but Excel application/process must be killed.

Excel is version 2003.
OS is Vista Enterprise 64-bit

Incidentally, Powerpoint hangs also, for sure when "Insert --> Movies and Sounds..." is pressed, but "Insert --> Pictures --> (Clipart and From File)" works. So far, all other Microsoft Office applications also work except for Excel and Powerpoint.

I have uninstalled and re-installed at least four (4) times, repaired the installation, updated all drivers (Lenovo T410 laptop), updated the OS, scanned with antivirus and anti-malware applications, among other things.

Event viewer shows an "Application Hang" Event ID 1002, Task Category 101, with the Description: "The program EXCEL.EXE version 11.0.8328.0 stopped interacting with Windows and was closed. To see if more information about the problem is available, check the problem history in the Problem Reports and Solutions control panel. Process ID: 1440 "

Any suggestions as to what might resolve these issues would be appreciated. Thanks!
