Pasting formula

Hi Guys
This may seem a dumb and simple question, but I just can’t get it. I only use Excel rarely.
If I have say 500 in cell A:1
In cell A:5 TO A:20 I want it to display the amount of cell A:1.
I have put in the simple formula =A:1 in cell A:5 and then copy and paste this down cell A:20
How do I get the cells A:5 TO A:20 to display the contents of cell A:1 correctly?
Sorry I know this is probably a dumb question for you guys.
