Stretching some data across cells but not others--how is this possible?

    Hello,

I have a printout of an Excel calendar that has dates (e.g. 1, 2, 3) at the top of the cells, and then a message stretching across the bottom of the cells for a whole week. I don't have access to an electronic version.

Does anyone know how this might be possible? I know how to merge cells, but I thought you could only have it one way or the other. In this spreadsheet it definitely looks like there are numbers in each individual cell, but a message stretched across the same cells below.

    Thanks in advance!

So you're saying that in the same row, there is a message stretched across and also values in the individual cells?
I can think of two possibilities.
    1. they put spaces between the text to make it appear that the second row of values were in individual cells.
    2. They overlaid a text box with no fill and no line.
I put both possibilities into an example sheet attached.

PS. I used "Center Across Selection" rather than merged cells.

Thanks, Chemist. I bet it was a text box, then.
