merging different data from rows into a single row

i have an enormous amount of data concerning information, notes and operational data for a large number of people that has originated in different workbooks,
as a general rule each field is identified by the user name however there are slight differences in the way this data was spelled, ie slight spelling differences between the same persons name from sheet to sheet.

all this data is being combined into a single work sheet so that the data can be cleanled up and imported into a new database.

after combining these workshhets and sorting by name i have an enormous amount of duplication yet each row contains different data which needs to be merged into a blank cell above or below it to combine all the differing data into one unique and complete record for each individual.
the problem i have is merging data is a manual process of copying and pasting through thousands of records and identifying by sight wheter one record(row) is actually the same as the entry abouveor below it.

Is there a quick way i can merge (move cell contents) data from a row below/above so that i dont overwrite the data in the row being pasted to. ?

it seems there ar multiple threads with similar issues howevr all have slighly differnt approaches to how these were initiated, using look ups etc to bring in data, in this case, i have a huge list (circa 16,000 row entries across 50 columns) which needs to be verified and merged and redundant duplicates (rows) deleted, as this for the most part requires manual verification a shortcut or a paste option to transparently paste from one row to the next leaving duplicates or non blanks in place would work, rather than cuting and pasting each cell individually (or in groups) , there are gaps in the data from colums to column and some data conatins updated or data that supeceeds the data in another row due to legay problems, using multiple workbooks to track similar data.?

O yeah im using excel 2003

Thanks, Understood, my apologies, i just figured it was difficult to tie in this with many other apparently similar type of queries, and figured it was a bit more basic than advanced and therefore would be more helpfull to the lees experienced excel users,.
