Combining two cells to get a date and time in one cell

I'm trying to combine two cells together, each with content.

A1 has 12/1/2010, B1 has 8:30 PM

I want '12/1/2010 8:30 PM' in C1

so i type in C1, =A1&" "&B1

but I end up with the accounting format, something like 40,000. I want the date and time.

How do I change this format?

Try instead:

=A1+B1

and format the cell as Date with Time as per C3
