Maintain links when file moved or name changed

Is there a way to set up links so they are not lost if the linked file is moved or renamed??

As near as I understand it, Windows does not provide a location-independent file descriptor. That is, if you move or rename a file, the Windows file directory system does not recognize it as the same file. As far as Windows is concerned you have a different file. Excel is dependent on the Windows file system so Excel has no idea that you've renamed or moved a file, it just knows that it can't find it anymore.

If there is a solution to this it would be in the form of a utility program with hooks into the Windows file system. I don't know of one I could recommend.
