    very simple % chart

Hi, I am using Excel 2003, I don't mess with charts much. I am using the chart wizard and can't figure out how to make it give me a pie chart with just two slices instead of 3, also I am highlighting the both labels and data: Column B6 has Total phones & C6 has 600. B8 has Verified Phones & C8 has 138. B10 has % Verified & C10 has a percentage formula resulting data being 23%. I originally highlighted B6:C10 then started the wizard but it put the percentage verified in a piece of the pie. So I reduced it to just B6:C8 but it is still showing a third piece as 0. I would like the labels on the chart to show the number of phones, not just the labels Total Phones & Verified Phones but Total Phones 600 and Verified Phones 138. And I want to add a label that says Percentage Complete 23% and one that says Estimated time to Completion 7 days, I have not actually worked formula out yet. These numbers are linked to another sheet and up date daily.

    Thank you
    Ken

There are a number of issues with your description. Chart data ranges must be contiguous; you have rows in between the data you want to plot. A pie chart isn't the right type of chart for this. A pie chart shows pieces of a whole, but you want to plot one whole and a part. You can't really mix percentages and counts on a pie chart. (Some folks around here will tell you that pie charts are overused and are seldom appropriate.)

Please see the attached, which I think resolves your issues. It's a bar chart. The percentage is actually plotted as a separate series which has been formatted to make the bar invisible, but the data label is still visible. It can be moved around if you want it to appear in a different position.

Thank you, I have what I need, and I figured out how to dress it up a bit. I was wondering is there anyway that I can write a formula in the chart or create a link to a formula? I have the percentage of completion on the y axis label, this is where I would prefer to create a link to cell B6, which updates daily. If that's not possible I will just remember to change it each day. Thanks getting me out of the idea of pie chart, the bar chart realtes the information much better, I have ordered a book on charts so I can learn this part of Excel which I have very little experience with.

    Thanks
    Ken

There are two ways I can think of, off the top of my head.

One way is the way I showed you in my attachment. This involves creating an additional series where the only data point is your %. Then you select the series and add data labels. Then you format the series to have no fill and no lines. All that will be left is the data label, which you can move around to wherever you want.

Another option is use the camera tool to capture the cell with the percentage, and paste it into the chart. It won't actually part of the chart itself but will be displayed on top of it (you can also Group them together so they stay together). Same effect, just a different technique. See attachment for that version.
