Excel 2007 - how secure is password protection?

    Hello Everyone,

I currently have about a bazzilion usernames and passwords for various programs, log-ins, websites etc. I was considering creating a password database in Excel to store all my password details and using the built-in password protection to secure/hide the details so only I can see/access them. I have Excel 2007 and was wondering how secure the password security is. I've heard that the older versions weren't very secure and could be easily hacked but that Excel 2007 is a lot better in terms of security.

With regards to the type of passwords I'd be keeping in the database it wouldn't be anything vitial (no online banking details for instance) - it would be mostly things such as website usernames and passwords.

    Best regards
    -Rob

In Excel you could create your list then make the sheet very hidden. I have code to generate passwords, but the free option that martin suggests would be easier

You may also want to look at portableapps.com, I tend to keep mine on a usb stick encrypted in a password database! that way if I am away from home I have access!

These databases are very secure, I prefer to use open source versions rather than Shareware or payware, just because I can check the source code and make sure it isnt doing anything naughty with my passwords!!!!

Excel 2007 (and up) is pretty secure in terms of the password to open the file (128Bit AES - you can increase to 256 if desired).
