reformatting spreadsheet

I imported a report from my general ledger. Whereever there is a forumla, it appears as text with the formula written out. All of the numbers are formatted as text.

I selected the whole sheet and then

1. right clicked
2. Selected Format cells
3. Protection - Made sure the page was not protected
4. I went to the number tab and selected number with 2 decimal places

THis did not change the formatting of the spreadsheet

Anu suggestions as to what will resolve this porblem. TIA TOM
