Scoring chart for racing competition

m helping run a horse competition that needs to be scored. at the moment it is all done manually. I was wondering if there is a way of doing it on excel. I can use formulas etc but need a bit of help on the setup side of it to start with.

We have 30 entries each day each selecting between 6 or 7 horses. Each selection will have a reserve incase one horse does not run, so if the 1st selection is a non runner the 2nd one need to be used. Points are scored for 1st 2nd and 3rd place.

If anyone can help it would be much appreciated as Ive messed about with it a bit but with no luck so far.
