excel function wanted

Hi All

I am looking for an excel function similar to vlookup. In a fixed area (or, if this is easier: in one single column) I want excel to search for the maximum value.
The Tricky thing is that the values are monthly ones. So I want excel to search the column for the maximum value between the first month and another specific month, so the bandwidth differs depending on which ending month I choose.

I do specify the ending month in one seperate cell.

So I wonder if I could use a similar function like vlookup, but instead of giving me the last value (as specified in seperate cell) giving me the maximum value between start and ending month (as specified in seperate cell).

Do you have an example to work with, would probably make it easier to visualize what you are wanting to do.
