Very frustrated little novice here, looking for a genius to relieve my frustration...

I have a formula in a cell that refers to data validated cells. It is suppose to count if specified text is selected in the drop down list of the data validated range. However, just selecting from the drop down list doesn't cause the formula to react, i have to retype the formula and then it counts it. Is there a way to get past this and to have the formula calculate when the item is selected.

I have for instance, annual leave, compensation leave and sick leave in the drop down. The formula - =countif(A1:A10,"Annual leave").

Am I doing something wrong?
