deleting all characters after the first letter in a cell and repeatign for entire row

    Hi,

A client sent us an excel spreadsheet containing 4 columns of name and registration numbers. The 4 columns are: Student ID Student first name Student last name and student nickname (This is Thailand, everyone has at least one nickname).

We need to reduce the the first name to a first initial only and then merge them into one field with a period between the end of the last name and the first initial to build a database to set up email accounts for all the students along the format of duck.d, astair.f.

We've just downloaded imacro and at this stage intend to use it to upload all fo the names to create webmail accounts for each student and pre-assign their password as being their student id number.

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

Hi, if in column C are the surnames, in col.B the names, maybe you could try

    =C2&"."&LEFT(B2,1)&"."

    For istance:

    Ananda Everingham

    becomes

    Everingham.A.

    Regards

    Thanks very much Canapone.

    Worked like a charm. Brilliant.

Of course what the title should be is repeating for an entire column, not row. I don't need the trailing period but I figured that out - excel is not one of my strong points.

    Perfect solution.
