    day and date function

    hi,

a simple question which i cant seem to figure out.

how do i get the day for a date that i have entered, i changed the format cell to ddd in the custom part and entered date in the fuction but the days are incorrect.

also instead of entering the dates for an income and expenditure sheet, what can i do to avoid having to enter the date, which is the same each month, into a new month. hopefully you can understand what i mean.

i am using excel 2000 pro edition

    many thanks for any help

    slinger

    Re: day and date function

setting the number format to ddd should have displayed a short version of the weekday if the cell contains a valid date.

it would be simplest to see a copy of the workbook in order to understand why it is not working for you.

How can you have the same date each month? do you mean same day number such as 17th of each month?
    Cheers

yes the same day number. i have payments that are made the same date each month, the 4th, 5th and some others. i receive payments on other dates. it would be easier to have it automated to put the dates in each month without typing all the dates in again on a new month. i use the same sheet so i dont have trouble swapping it to other sheets.

and my system time is upto date and correct

    cheers

    Re: day and date function

If you have a date in A1 then here are two ways to get the day (e.g. "Sat") in B1.

    Use this formula

    =A1

    and format B1 as ddd

    or use this formula

    =TEXT(A1,"ddd")

    Does that work for you?

It my be your System Date & Time are not set correctly.
Make sure it is set for English (United Kingdom) and NOT English (United States)

    To check:
    Click Start
    Click Control Panel
    Click Regional and Language Options
Under the Regional Options Tab, in the drop down box,
make sure it says English (United Kingdom)
also check the Time and Date boxes lower down to make sure their correct.

    See if that works.
