    Cell Protection

I think I posted this in the wrong area early as this should belong to Excel General

I have a worksheet and setup to allow users to edit (using Tools -. "Allow Users to Edit Ranges") various ranges of cells but NOT the entire worksheet at different places (eg. C3:D15, F22:F50, J22:I40, F68:F69, etc.)

When I enabled Worksheet protection, I found some ranges of the cells should have been protected (preventing users from edit) are still editable by users such as A22:E50.

    Can someone please help me
1 - explain to me what was the problem ?
2 - how I can fix it to prevent users editing cell ranges that I do not want them to touch ?

Thanks in advance for any assistance in solving this problem.

    Wellie,

How about you select the cells you want locked/unlocked and select Ctrl + 1.

This will take you to the format cells dialogue box >> select protection tab and then check or uncheck the Locked box.

    re: Cell Protection problems

    Hi,

If I understand your Q. you're using the wrong functionality.

By default all cells are locked from entry, but the locking only kicks in when you protect the worksheet. Hence for all those cells for which you wish to PERMIT entry, select the cells, go to Format Cells Protection, and untick the 'Locked' option.

Now when you Protect the sheet with Tools Protection Protect sheet the users will only be able to change the unlocked cells.

Thumbs up Re: Cell Protection problems

    Hi Richard,

Thanks for your help. Problem is now fixed.

You were right, I did use the wrong functionality. As soon as I applied " Format Cells Protection, and untick the 'Locked' option", it works like champ.

Thanks again for everyone promptly responded.
    Have a great day.
